Different Stages of Liver Cancer:
It is the stage of a cancer which reveals the doctor how deep it has developed. It is very significant as decisions regarding treatment are made as per the stage of the cancer. The scans and tests also render some info about the stage of the cancer. Liver cancer stages reveal whether the cancer is defined till the liver or it has spread to the other tissues.
Number of stages of liver cancer
When the physician strategizes treatment for liver can, they not only see the size of the tumor and its spread area, but also find out how well the liver is functioning. So, doctors have crafted different staging schemes to help them segregate.
There are 4 stages of liver cancer. Majorly, the stage of the cancer depends on-
- Tumor size
- The growth of cancer in the blood vessels. This is crucial as it is very easy for the cancer cells to enter the blood vein and spread to different organs, if the tumor is closely linked with blood vessels.
- If the cancer has reached the lymph nodes and other body organs.
In this stage, there is just one tumor and the cancer and it hasn’t reached the blood vessels, other body parts and lymph nodes yet.
At this stage, the cancer virus hasn’t reached the lymph nodes or other body parts yet. It could either
- Be a single tumor which has developed in the liver’s blood vessels.
- Few tumors which are smaller than 5 cm but haven’t grown into blood vessels.
This stage is further divided into three groups- Stage 3A, 3B and 3C
You have more than one tumor and one of them is bigger than 5cm. In this level, the cancer hasn’t reached the lymph nodes or other body part.
The cancer has advanced to at least one of the major blood vessels of the liver either hepatic vein or portal vein. But the cancer cells haven’t spread to any other body part or lymph nodes.
In this stage, the cancer has reached the organs near the liver, leaving the gall bladder. However, it hasn’t reached the lymph nodes or any other body part yet.
This stage 4 liver cancer is also divided into 2 stages- stage 4A and stage 4B.
In this stage, the cancer could be of any size and there could more than one tumor. It might have developed in the organs near the liver or in the blood vessels. It has also reached the lymph nodes, but the other parts of the body are secured.
In this stage, the cancer could be of any size and there could be more than one tumor. It might have developed and reached the blood vessels and body parts near the liver. It might or might not have reached the lymph nodes, but definitely has reached the other parts of the body like bones and lungs.
These different liver cancer stages give the doctors a wide idea to treat the patients accordingly.
